The formation of Granite

Granite is one of three types of igneous rock that forms from Magma or Lava as it cools. These substances in turn become Granite when it solidifies and becomes a rock formation. When a volcano erupts, the magma flows on the Earth's surface and then steeps into the earths crust around other rocks.

The magma is many different types of metamorphic rocks that have been melted down inside the volcano. Once there the magma begins to cool off. Then the cool Magma begins to solidify or harden into a rock formation. That rock is called granite. The process actually takes millions of years to finish. Granite rock is made mostly of Aluminum Oxide and Silicon Dioxide. So over millions of years your Granite Worktops have been going through many changes before they get to your kitchen!

Quarrying the Granite

The first step in quarrying granite is to find it. The stone, which is hard and ranges in colour from pink to black is often shot through with quartz crystals. It's fairly common in large chunks and outcroppings seen above ground. Granite that is quarried, however, must come from larger deposits beneath the earth to be considered commercially viable.

Once the granite is located, it's cut out of the earth in gigantic chunks (often 30 by 30 by 12 feet) and then split into smaller, 20-ton slabs before being removed individually from the quarry. The rough cut granite is often taken by truck or hoisted on a crane, then transported to the sawing room. Seeing that this is how your new Granite Worktops start in such a raw form makes Granite Worktops the most beautiful and amazing choice for any home.

From Block to polished Slabs
Manufacturing and Installation

In the sawing room the granite is reduced further by a huge diamond-tipped saw.  The Granite is left in long slabs and then polished on one face using different grades or grits of diamond polishing heads.

This is done under pressure and heat with water to give Granite its mirror like finish. The slabs are then loaded into containers and shipped to destinations all over the world. Your new granite worktops are well on there way at this stage of the process.

Your slab is then deliverd to our workshop via a lorry with lifting equipment and set down on secure A - frames purpose built to store marble, granite and quartz slabs on.

Our masons will then start mapping out with the templates we produced in your premise and begin to cut the granite slabs you have chosen to size.  These will then be shaped, polished and any cut outs or designs completed.

Its then loaded into one of our vans and our fixing team makes its way to you to install your new granite worktops.
